Total option volume is running just above average at 6 million so far today, led by the big indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 693,000 options traded, with 388,000 puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options with volume of 326,000 and a put/call ratio of 3 to 1. Following closely is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) at 304,000 contracts, 198,000 of which are calls.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has 236,000 options changing hands with a put/call ratio of better than 2 to 1. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen 200,000 contracts turn over, with 125,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 175,000 options moving, with puts outpacing calls by more than 2 to 1.
The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 144,000 options traded, with 88,000 puts. The iShares China Large-Cap Fund (FXI) rounds out the list at 83,000 contracts, dominated by 70,000 calls.
