Total option volume is running just above average at 6 million so far today, with mixed action in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 710,000 options trading as puts outpace calls by more than 2 to 1. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) follows at 260,000, with a similar put/call ratio.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 220,000 contracts changing hands, also with puts eclipsing calls by more than 2 to 1. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 197,000 options traded, dominated by 179,000 calls. Following is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) at 177,000 options, with 95,000 calls.
The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has seen 122,000 contracts turn over, with 69,000 calls. And the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 88,000 options moving, led by 58,000 calls.
