Total option volume is strong at more than 8 million contracts so far today, with some bullish sentiment showing in the big indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
More than 1.1 million options have traded in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY), with 730,000 puts. Next up is the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) with volume of 501,000 as puts eclipse calls by nearly 2 to 1. The S&P 500 index (:SPX) has 336,000 options traded, with the unusual circumstance of calls slightly outpacing puts.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has seen 277,000 contracts turn over as puts barely outnumber calls. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 267,000 options traded as calls outstrip puts by more than 2 to 1.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 109,000 contracts changing hands, with 64,000 calls. Just behind is the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) at 107,000 options, with 59,000 puts.
