WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than 40 U.S. states have agreed to a nationwide settlement over foreclosure abuses.

The deal would force the five largest mortgage lenders to reduce loans for about 1 million households. And the remaining holdouts could sign onto a deal in the coming days.

Officials say that negotiators worked well into Monday night to persuade more states to join the settlement. There is growing optimism that California, Delaware, Nevada, New York and others will eventually sign on.

The reduced loans would benefit homeowners who are behind on their payments and owe more than their homes are worth. The lenders — Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and Ally Financial — would also send checks for about $2,000 to hundreds of thousands of people who lost homes to foreclosure.

how come everyone asumes that it is always people spending more on a home than they could afford, did you ever stop to think that some people cannot afford their mortgages because of a job loss, death, sickness, cost of living going up, wages and hours being cut. It is not always because some spent more than they could afford. Walk a mile in another persons shoes than judge for yourselves. Stop It!

What about the responsible tax payers who are still struggling to keep their mortgage current and pay their taxes- they lost home value as well as income from no fault of their own- how about cutting them a break and lower their mortgage as well. Why do they have to become delinquent in order to get relief? Lift a burden from these hard working citizens, don't make them suffer more while the banks CEO's and the likes get millions in bonuses and free money bail-outs.

What about the Home owners that are still struggling to pay their mortgages and taxes? They lost value in their homes as will as income- why not cut these tax payers a break and reduce their inflated mortgages as well.

Anyone that gets a $2,000 check should NEVER be able to borrow again! And the same for those who get principal reductions! Nothing more than attempted transfer of weath and payments to those who failed. I do feel bad for those who lost their homes, but, THEY made a free choice to borrow and buy.....
