Industries at a glance: Hiring picks up in most broad US industries

U.S. employers added 171,000 jobs in October while hiring in August and September was stronger than first thought. At the same time, the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent, as more people started looking for work but not all found jobs.

Here's a look at the jobs added or lost in each major industry category:
