Movie Scores: How the critics rated the new movies

Movie Scores: How the weekend's new movies fared with film critics

They protect Earth from the dastardly aliens who roam among us, but Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones can only manage mediocre reviews from critics in "Men in Black 3."

The third film in the sci-fi comedy series finds Smith's character traveling back to 1969 to protect his partner from being killed. Josh Brolin does an eerily dead-on impression of Jones as the Young Agent K. AP Movie Critic Christy Lemire gave the movie just one and a half stars out of four, writing that it "shows the glossy style and vague, sporadic glimmers of the kind of energy that made this franchise such an enormous international hit. But more often it feels hacky, choppy and — worst of all — just not that funny."

Opening to much stronger reviews is the latest Wes Anderson film "Moonrise Kingdom," about a pair of misfit 12-year-olds who run away on a remote island off the New England coast. Bill Murray, Frances McDormand and Bruce Willis are among the strong supporting cast of grown-ups. Lemire gave it three and a half stars out of four, saying: "The contradiction inherent to all Wes Anderson films — the juxtaposition of the meticulous artificiality of the settings and the passionately wistful emotions that are longing to burst free — is at its most effective in a while here."

Here's a look at how these movies and others fared on the top review websites as of Friday afternoon. Each score is the percentage of positive reviews for the film:

— "Moonrise Kingdom": Metacritic, 82; Movie Review Intelligence, 83.2; Rotten Tomatoes, 95. Average: 86.7.

— "The Intouchables": Metacritic, 56; Movie Review Intelligence, 56.1; Rotten Tomatoes, 77. Average: 63.

— "Men in Black 3": Metacritic, 58; Movie Review Intelligence, 59.8; Rotten Tomatoes, 67. Average: 61.6.

— "Chernobyl Diaries": Metacritic, 45; Movie Review Intelligence, 49.8; Rotten Tomatoes, 25. Average: 39.9.
