NBA to Stream League Pass Games on Twitter, Facebook

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has announced that fans can now watch individual league pass games live on social media platforms like Facebook, Inc. FB and Twitter, Inc. TWTR.

Fans can click the “watch link” provided below official NBA tweets and posts, which will direct them to a NBA app. From there, they can buy the “contest on live stream” for $6.99 per game.

“We’ve spent a lot of years now cultivating an audience on social media, and when we looked at the (League Pass) packages we thought this would be a great way to add to our everyday storytelling on social (media),” said Melissa Rosenthal Brenner, the NBA’s Senior Vice President of Digital Media.

The NBA’s move is expected to be a slam dunk. The NBA fan base largely comprises millennials. As millennials are mostly hooked on to their smartphones and tablets, live streaming will bring more ad dollars.

Also, Rosenthal Brenner added that “over 90 percent of our players — I think the exact number is 87 percent — have at least one social (media) account. Our teams are committed to posting great content. At the end of the day, we’re all huge fans of the game and using social to talk hoops has been a very successful strategy for us. And that includes just access.”

Commenting on the NBA’s popularity on social media, the Huffington Post added that the NBA has a following of 17.6 million on Twitter that dwarfs the NFL, MLB and NHL followings of 13.8 million, 5.3 million and 4.2 million, respectively. On Facebook, the NBA has likes that are higher than the combined likes on the official pages of the NFL, MLB and NHL. The ala carte offering will boost the NBA’s already strong social media presence.

As for Twitter and Facebook, agreements like these do bring in advertising revenues and boost engagement levels. However, at present, details on revenue sharing between NBA and social media companies are not available.

At present, Facebook carries Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) whereas Twitter is a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock. Other companies worth consideration in the tech space include IZEA, Inc. IZEA and MeetMe, Inc. MEET. Both sport a Zacks Rank #1.
