Late on Thursday, Netflix tweeted its disinterest in branching out to support Research in Motion’s BlackBerry smartphones or PlayBook tablets. Their decision doesn’t come as much of a surprise since RIM’s library of third-party applications is considered to be vastly inferior to those of Android and Apple .

In an attempt to appeal to consumers, RIM has upgraded its software to make it possible for app makers to move existing Android apps to PlayBook. The upgrade also allows for the tablet to be connected to a television via a standard cord under the control of the BlackBerry smartphone. It is unclear whether Netflix will create a specific application for PlayBook or port its existing Android app across.
Netflix has more than 24 million U.S. subscribers and has applications for Apple’s iPhone and iPad and for devices that run on Google’s Android software. Despite any backlash from consumers due to price hikes, Netflix has managed to expand its streaming-only services to Canada and parts of Latin America.
