News Summary: BMW recalls X5 SUVs with diesel engines to fix power steering problem

Associated Press

THE VEHICLE: BMW is recalling nearly 250,000 X5s worldwide. The xDrive 35d SUVs have diesel engines and are from the 2009 through 2012 model years.

THE PROBLEM: A bolt can loosen and break on a belt pulley, causing the loss of power-assisted steering. The SUVs would revert to manual steering, but that takes a lot more effort to turn the wheel.

THE SOLUTION: BMW dealers will replace the bolt and tighten it to proper specifications. They'll also add a coating that keeps the bolt from coming loose. U.S. owners will be notified about the recall in January.
