News Summary: Delta to drop Memphis as hub airport

News Summary: Delta Air Lines dropping Memphis as a hub airport this fall; will cut 230 jobs

Associated Press

HUB DRUB: Delta Air Lines will drop its money-losing hub in Memphis, Tenn., this fall, slashing flights there and eliminating 230 jobs.

MERGER FALLOUT: It's the outcome small hubs like Memphis, Cincinnati, and Salt Lake City feared when airline mergers began five years ago with Delta's purchase of Northwest Airlines.

CONGRESSIONAL IRE: U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., noted Delta's CEO told Congress in 2008 that the Northwest merger would not impact Memphis. He is discussing with the Justice Department "growing evidence that Delta is violating the promises made to the Department when seeking antitrust immunity for their merger."
