SIDELINE SAFETY: The price of gold rose ahead of Tuesday's U.S. presidential election. Volume was light as many traders awaited the outcome of the close race between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney.

WHEAT WORRIES: Wheat prices rose slightly on persistent questions about global supplies heading into the U.S. winter wheat growing season. Most of the crop has been planted, but the Southern Plains remain dry. Meanwhile, supplies appear to be growing tighter in Russia and the Ukraine.

MIXED BAG: Prices rose for oil, wholesale gasoline, silver and palladium. Copper, soybeans and corn fell.
