News Summary: Jeep Grand Cherokee probed in fires

News Summary: Feds open probe into ceiling fires in 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokees

Associated Press

THE INVESTIGATION: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating fires in the ceilings of 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs.

THE REASON: NHTSA has three complaints from owners whose SUVs caught fire while they were being driven. All three ceilings caught fire near the passenger-side sun visor, resulting in smoke and flames. NHTSA has no reports of injuries. The probe affects 146,000 vehicles in the U.S.

THE REMEDY: None yet. Investigators will determine if a recall is needed. Chrysler says it's too early in the investigation to point out a cause or whether there's a defect.
