MATERIAL WORLD: A broad rally in commodities prices pushed the stocks of materials and energy companies higher. That in turn lifted the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500.

DOW RECORD: The Dow ended the day at a record, climbing 0.4 percent to 14,673.46. The index is up 12 percent this year. The S&P 500 index is also close to its record high.

FIRST SOLAR: The stock of First Solar surged 46 percent to $12.31 after the solar panel maker issued a better-than-expected forecast for its 2013 results. Solid predictions for the following two years, helped by continued growth in shipments, also boosted the stock.
