News Summary: Stocks fall on Friday

News Summary: Stocks fall on Friday, but still post gains for 3Q

3Q, WE HARDLY KNEW YE: Stocks fell on Friday, the last trading day of the quarter. It was a bumpy ride for investors, with indices falling on five days out of six as the quarter ended. But the Dow still gained 4.3 percent.

WHAT HAPPENED FRIDAY? Commerce Department data showed that consumer spending rose last month only because they spent more on gasoline. That won't help the economy much.

WHAT'S NEXT: On Thursday, we'll see minutes from the Federal Reserve's September interest rate meeting, and the Commerce Department will release August factory orders. September employment data is due on Friday.
