HIRING CUTBACK: Target plans to hire about 70,000 seasonal workers for the holiday shopping season, down about 20 percent from the 88,000 it hired a year ago.
FULL-TIMERS STEP UP: Part of the reason for the decline in seasonal hires is that full-time Target workers want to work extra holiday hours.
CROWDED STORES: Target says it wants to be able to adjust staffing more quickly to respond to peaks and valleys in customer traffic, which have become more pronounced as shoppers time their buying for when they believe they can get the best deals.
