NH's Hassan, panel endorse lower jobless tax

NH's Hassan, panel endorse employer unemployment tax rates; recommend benefit increase

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire employers are getting a break on the taxes they pay to fund unemployment benefits.

Gov. Maggie Hassan and Employment Security Commissioner George Copadis announced Wednesday that an emergency surcharge on employers is being eliminated that will save them $29.9 million in 2014. The action is in response to a recommendation by the Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council.

The surcharge will be lowered effective Oct. 1. It is the second surcharge removed since the economy began improving. The first tax reduction was last October.

The state increased employer tax rates to ensure money was available to pay benefits and made other changes to the unemployment insurance program to weather the recession.

The council also recommended increasing some jobless benefit levels. The Legislature would have to approve a benefit increase.
