Nicaragua's Public Registry Wins Latin America Geospatial Excellence Award

Thomson Reuters Supports the Country`s Implementation of a Modern Digital Land Registry - the Basis for the Award Washington, D.C., September 29, 2014 - Thomson Reuters announced today that Nicaragua`s Public Registry has been honored with the Latin America Geospatial Excellence Award for Land Management. The award was presented to Dr. Eduardo Ortega Roa, Deputy Managing Director of Nicaragua`s Public Registry, on September 23 at the Latin American Geospatial Forum in Mexico City. The organizer of the forum, Geospatial Media and Communications Ltd., issued the award. The Latin America Geospatial Excellence Awards recognize innovation and excellence demonstrated by geospatial technology developers, professionals, end users and policy makers. "It is a great honor for me, on behalf of the Nicaraguan Supreme Court and the Registry Information Management team, to receive this award - and to have done so in the presence of representatives of over 20 countries and hundreds of experts from Latin America," said Dr. Ortega Roa. Nicaragua`s Public Registry was selected to receive this award for the development and implementation of its central tax and property management information system called SIICAR (Sistema de Información Integrado de Catastro y Registro), which is powered by Thomson Reuters Aumentum software platform. The SIICAR project automated Chinandega Province`s formerly labor-intensive land administration processes, resulting in more consistent and standardized procedures to register property in Nicaragua. It has significantly reduced the time required for users to register lands. "What once took us months or years to process, now with SIICAR, we are in full compliance with Registry Law 698 which requires us to process applications within 30 days," said Dr. Ortega Roa. The SIICAR system also provides real-time public access to the land registry. As a result, more citizens are securing their land rights in Nicaragua, which supports an increase in land and property investment in the country and an improvement in the Nicaraguan mortgage market. Ultimately, the SIICAR system is improving transparency in the real estate market in Nicaragua. "The Nicaraguan government has invested in streamlining its land management practices and worked hard to modernize their processes - and their effort is paying off," said Donald Peele, Vice President in the Tax and Accounting business of Thomson Reuters. "We`re proud that Nicaragua`s Public Registry has won the Latin America Geospatial Excellence Award. The honor is well deserved."
