Nokia will almost certainly launch its first modern tablet later this year, and the latest quotes from CEO Stephen Elop confirms it.

In statements made to the press in Sydney, as reported by Australian Financial Review, Elop said Nokia is looking very closely at making a tablet. We first heard about the interview on TechCrunch.

Here's Elop:

We haven’t announced tablets at this point, but it is something we are clearly looking at very closely. We are studying very closely the market right now as Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet, so we are trying to learn from that and understand what the right way to participate would be and at what point in time.

The Verge recently reported that Nokia is working on a Windows RT (the version of Windows 8 designed only for tablets) tablet that will launch early this year. It'll have a 10-inch screen and a special battery-powered cover.
