OSLO, NORWAY--(Marketwired - Jun 12, 2013) - Hydro issued a notice of force majeure to itsalumina customers on Wednesday as power outages and lowered production atAlunorte alumina refinery may affect alumina deliveries to customers. It iscurrently not possible to determine or estimate whether and how deliveriesto customers will be affected.
Norsk Hydro ASA's partly-owned Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil hasrecently experienced power outages resulting in disruption to production.On 18 May 2013, Alunorte experienced a black-out in its electrical powersupply system due to unexpected external events and as a consequenceAlunorte suffered a partial electrical power outage. On 2 June 2013, whilein the process of stabilizing and resuming production, Alunorte experiencedanother, shorter black-out caused by an unrelated, external event. Theevents have caused disruption to Alunorte's production of alumina. Alunortehas not been able to resume full production.
Alunorte production will be lower in the second quarter than levelsobserved in the first quarter, and expected to remain unsatisfactory alsofor the rest of the year. As a general measure, Hydro has established ateam of experts aiming to stabilize and increase production at therefinery.
Alunorte has a nameplate capacity of 6.3 million tonnes and is the world'slargest alumina refinery.
