COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- The chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is scheduled to tour Entergy Corp.'s Palisades nuclear plant in southwestern Michigan this week.

Gregory Jaczko plans to speak with reporters Friday following the tour of the nuclear power plant, which sits along Lake Michigan near South Haven in Van Buren County's Covert Township. The plant has been under increased scrutiny because of a series of safety problems in recent months.

The NRC classifies Palisades as one of the four worst performers of the 104 nuclear plants it regulates.

Officials from New Orleans-based Entergy say there's been improvements in the safety culture at the plant.

Jaczko's planned visit was announced Monday, the same day he announced his resignation. He plans to lead the commission until his successor is confirmed.
