NRC head visits Ga. nuclear plant being built

NRC head visits Ga. nuclear power plant now under construction, promises vigilance

WAYNESBORO, Ga. (AP) -- The head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is promising the watchdog agency will monitor a new nuclear plant under construction in Georgia.

NRC Chairwoman Allison Macfarlane toured Plant Vogtle in eastern Georgia on Friday.

She said the nuclear safety agency will monitor the two existing reactors at the site as well as those being built as part of the roughly $15 billion project. Macfarlane says the agency has a good "working relationship" with the Atlanta-based Southern Co., which runs the plant.

Macfarlane was joined on the tour by Democratic Rep. John Barrow, who said the reactors will provide electricity that allows for economic growth in the decades to come.

A plant based on the same design is currently under construction in South Carolina.
