Japanese phone giant NTT Docomo has enlisted chip leader Intel (INTC) and U.K.-based Vodafone (VOD) to jointly produce a new, open-source smartphone operating system to be called Tizen, Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun reported. Docomo has also enlisted Korea's Samsung, No. 1 global smartphone vendor, in the effort. The new OS would compete with U.S. tech giant Google's (GOOG) Android and Apple's (AAPL) iOS platform, which together have about 90% of the smartphone market.
