Nvidia launched digital cockpit computing system
Nvidia’s (NVDA) Drive CX is a computing platform meant for advanced digital cockpit systems. Nvidia has referred to Drive CX as a “digital cockpit computer” for cars. Drive CX functions with cars that use multiple screens to drive multiple interfaces at once.
Drive CX can drive multiple high-resolution displays and virtual machines (or VMs) and supports Google (GOOGL) Android, BlackBerry’s (BBRY) QNX, and Linux operating systems. Based on the Tegra X1 processor, the idea behind the Drive CX launch is to provide a single central computing system that takes care of all the displays inside the car.
You can consider investing in the Market Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) and the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) to gain exposure to Nvidia. Nvidia makes up about 1.94% and 0.22% of these ETFs, respectively.
Nvidia’s philosophy is that in the future, cars will have more and more screens built in, so a central computer that can manage these multiple screens will prove to be competitive. Currently, high-tech cars have about 700,000 pixels that need to be pushed. Nvidia claims that its Drive CX is powerful enough to push up to 16.6 million pixels. This appears to be a feasible solution, since by adding some passenger displays, it is easy to increase pixel count.
Nvidia’s Drive CX comes equipped with company-made software called Drive Studio that can simulate a car’s cockpit, which we’ll discuss in more detail in a later part of this series.
