Officials reject flaw claims at Antigua plant

Chinese, Antiguan officials reject opposition allegations of flaws at new power plant

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (AP) -- Antiguan and Chinese officials are denying allegations from the Caribbean country's political opposition that used generators were installed in a new power plant.

Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and Chinese Ambassador Lin Hanming say the 30-megawatt Wadadli Power Plant in Antigua was built with new equipment and is providing reliable power.

At a Monday press conference, Spencer said the "power plant is new, the generators are new and the government of Antigua & Barbuda received value for money."

A government engineer said the generators' condition was due to normal wear and tear.

China's state-owned Export-Import Bank financed the project with a $47 million loan.

Opposition officials could not immediately be reached.
