Oil at 5-week high above $102 a barrel

Oil reaches 5-week high, fueled by Iran concerns and improving US economy

NEW YORK (AP) -- Tensions between Iran and the West continued to weigh on energy markets as oil rose to the highest level in five weeks on Thursday.

Benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude rose 45 cents to $102.24 in New York, while Brent crude, which is used to price foreign oil imported by U.S. refineries, rose $1.08 to $120.01 in London.

The price of WTI has risen about more than 3 percent since the start of the year. The increase in Brent has been even steeper, up nearly 12 percent.

Iran has been the center of attention in the Middle East — and the oil market — since November. It has threatened to cut off oil supplies to Europe to retaliate for an embargo that the EU plans to implement this summer.

The U.S. and Europe are using sanctions to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear program, which they fear will be used to develop a bomb. Iran denies the claim. The European Union buys about 18 percent of Iran's total crude exports.

Iran relies on oil exports for about half of its revenue. Iran state media reported Wednesday that Iran would halt exports to six European countries. Iran's Foreign Ministry later denies that.

Analysts think Iran would hurt itself by stopping crude shipments.

"Given Iran's dependence on its oil revenues and the latest reports of its payment difficulties, an immediate ban on shipments is not overly credible," said a report from analysts at Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "At current prices, a ban on oil shipments would thus cost Iran around $70 million in daily oil revenues if no other buyers could be found."

The weather in Europe is keeping oil prices high as well, especially for Brent. A severe cold snap is pushing up demand for energy. The rise in Brent in turn contributes to high gasoline prices in the U.S., since many refineries use Brent to make gasoline.

Also Thursday there were more signs that the U.S. economy is recovering. The Labor Department said weekly applications for jobless benefits fell for the fourth time in five weeks to the lowest point since March 2008. While lower unemployment may be good news, it's also likely to increase demand for oil and push up prices.

Oil prices spiked at this time last year with uprisings in several Middle East nations, particularly Libya. Investors who worried about major disruptions in supplies bought oil and drove up the price. WTI is up 21 percent from a year ago, when it sold for around $85 a barrel. Brent is up about 15 percent.

In other energy trading Thursday, heating oil rose almost a penny to $3.20 per gallon and gasoline futures rose 4 cents to $3.04 per gallon.

Natural gas rose 15 cents, or 6 percent, to $2.57 per 1,000 cubic feet after the Energy Department reported the nation's gas supplies fell more than analysts expected last week.

At the pump, the national average for gasoline was unchanged at $3.52 a gallon.

if these prices can't be brought back under control, our economy will come to a stand still........... always remember that the big trucks that transport our goods and our raw materals we need to produce products in this great country still only get 5 - 10 miles per gallon on average........ the last time we had $120.00 a barrel crude oil, diesel fuel was cheaper than gas by a dollar a gallon.......... the big problem this time is that diesel fuel now costs up to $.50 cents more a gallon then regular unleaded gas.......... everything in this country is trucked at one point or another........ thats the bottom line........ all this garbage on the news these days, the latest about contraception, and nobody can see this brick wall coming up fast......... if we ever get to $150.00 a barrel........ heaven help us........ can you imagine $6.00 a gallon fuel oil next year when the weather gets back to normal temperatures in the northeast.......

Its time to start drilling in our own country we have plenty oil in the Dakotas as well as in Colorado not to mention the off shore reserves. Its all the oil companies way of keeping the oil prices high. We should vote for a new president if this one doesnt take the right steps to lead us to independant of foriegn oil. Our oil could be lot cheaper if we push the issue

Bill - I'm posting it everywhere and I will not buy gas that weekend. I like the idea that people can get together and accomplish something, however small. Time for the 99% to take back the country.Corporatism is a serious disease that needs to be beat back and gone.

The Energy Information Administration, the statistical arm of the U.S. Energy Department says gasoline prices were $1.83 when Mr. Obama took office. Remember the hysterical accusations whenever gasoline spiked upward over $2 or $3 a gallon during the Bush years? It was all “Bush’s fault”, or “Bush is a tool of the oil companies”. What are you paying now for gasoline? What will you be paying next month or this summer?

Doom and gloom is ahead for America! We are being manipulated by oil speculators! Oh my, the unemployment numbers go down a fraction of a percent and these thieves use this as another excuse to raise the price! In reality, as long as the price of oil is controlled by Wall Street, our economy will NEVER recover!! Just wait a few months when we are paying $5.00 a gallon! 1929 is almost here again!!!

Roger I agree Memorial day weekend is your chance to fight back and pass the word not one American will purchace any gasoline or diesel fuel for 3 days let these greedy economy killers choke on that oil send a message to Wall street,Big Oil,OPEC,including IRAN and Washington Americans have had enough of being ripped of we demand gasoline at $1.75 a gallon not a penny more lets take back our country together.

Doom and gloom is ahead for America! We are hopelessly dependent on oil. Speculators have nothing to do with that.

Peak oil is a disaster in process. Everything else pales in comparison. How do you expect Congress to fix peak oil?

Exp_X, the buzz word PEAK Oil, is a farce and has no more validity than Global Warming thrash talk!! There is more Oil on the American Continent than we will ever need! The problem is that Big Oil is restricting output to keep prices up while closing Refinereries, all in a move to cause shortages to keep Gas prices up!! Wall Street Oil Speculators in turn price fix and gouge at the same time and in concert with Big Oil!! Where else do you see BILLIONs in profits except by Big Oil?? Peak Oil is a fairy tale used to keep The American People, dumb and blind while we are being robbed!!
    • exp_x 3 months ago
There is no denying peak oil. Anyone that does is completely incapable of rational thought. I could use harsher words. The only thing debatable is the timing.

People, did you know that America EXPORTS more oil than we import and also, we're exporting gas and our prices are this high. Really, give the people a break so this country will survive.

What better way to help a recovering economy by having the gas prices rise over $4.00 barrel this summer. It's getting real close and the summer blend hasn't even kicked in yet. I don't know about you but i sure haven't heard any thing from any of the candidates running for president address high gas prices.

Cars taking the kiddies to school and home in the afternoon are a big help. Thank God , I never get stuck behind a half-full school bus. Take the buses off the road and mandate that parent's drive. LISTEN ! Is that parental complaining that I hear?
  • Karen  •  3 months ago
Ok, let's get real about this. Why are we complaining about the price of oil/gasoline when in reality this is the world we're going to be living in for the next three decades until we begin to wake the hell up and stop sucking down oil like it's going to be here forever and start transitioning to alternatives. Obama's 'green energy' is a bust. We're not going down that path anyway, whether he likes it or not. But why the hell aren't we converting every truck and automobile to natural gas? The conversion is relatively simple.
I have to laugh when I hear people blaming speculators. Hell you'd speculate too if you could...I mean fossil fuel = black gold. It took a 100 million years to form and we're appoaching peak production on this planet in about 100 years. Just do the math. Peak production means the amount of oil coming out of the ground is on a one way trip DOWN. And not coincidentally at the same time the worlds consumption is poised to explode upwards as China/Asia tries to modernize. Hmm. And we aren't finding it anymore, because we've pretty much discovered all there is. We're talking about "FEEDING" a massive, growing social/industrial complex with known reserves declining. Now how the hell do you think that's going to play out?
And please, stop with the nuclear solution ( there isn't one ) or the hydrogen solution ( it takes more energy to produce hydrogen than it generates...it's a NET NEGATIVE energy source, or the bio this or the bio that. It takes years to bring a nuclear plant online; uranium isn't plentiful and we still don't know what to do with the waste.
We're screwed if we don't start asking the right questions and fast. There's a reason fossil fuel is woven through every facet of society today. It's a massive net energy generator unlike anything we've discovered or are likely to discover.
So get ready for $7-$8-$9 dollar gasoline. It's coming in your lifetime.
