Oil hits $100, first time since July

Oil prices jump to $100 for the first time since July

NEW YORK (AP) -- Oil prices have hit $100 per barrel for the first time in nearly four months.

The price of benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude rose as high as $100.79 in electronic trading on Wednesday.

Oil prices have been soaring for several weeks as the economy improves while tensions rise in countries that hold some of the world's major sources of crude.

Benchmark crude has surged 26 percent since the end of September. It crossed the $100 mark after the Labor Department reported that consumers paid less for gas, cars and computers. As inflation slows, it increases pressure on the Federal Reserve to do more to further stimulate the economy.

Fears of another U.S. recession had knocked oil prices from their 2011 peak at $113.93. But recent economic reports have shown that consumers are spending more, and manufacturing activity continues to grow.

Meanwhile, Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil exporter, is suspected of developing nuclear weapons, according to a United Nations report earlier this month. Its nuclear program could lead to international trade sanctions, and Israel has threatened military action.

Companies operating in Nigeria also say that oil production has been hurt by spills, sabotage and outright thefts. Nigeria is one of the top five oil exporters to the U.S.

Supplies of oil, gasoline and diesel also have been falling in the U.S.

Where are all the politicians in this. Not one word from any of them. Just lining there pockets with straight cash homy. DO NOT REELECT THEM!!!!!!!!! Send a message.
    • dailyobserver 6 months ago
If it were only that simple. Haven't you noticed that elections change nothing. By throwing the bums out, you simply usher in a new set of bums. Don't you see that?

They don't do anything because no one ever calls them and complains about it. We sit here day after day and complain to each other when we should be calling the person you voted for and telling them if they don't do something they won't get re-elected.

If you don't like the price of gas, walk instead. It will make you appreciate the value of moving your fat body 20+ miles for only $3.50.

only a #$%$ like you would make an idiotic comment like that, typical #$%$ you are
    • MattB 6 months ago
      Seriously?? That's your answer...walk?
    • Dirk 6 months ago
No, that's not my answer. I'm just trying to illustrate the value of a gallon of gas. Your average car weighs 4000 pounds. Try moving 4000 pounds 20 miles for $3.50 using any other energy source.

EXACTLY!! They feed us the line of crap about supplies and instability in this country or that country but the bottom line is , there is a big travel holiday coming up so they up the prices because they know they can and they know we'll pay.

Goldman Sachs bought up oil futures a couple of months ago. No doubt these organized crime scumbags are doing everything they can to jack up oil prices again. These worthless dirtbags are the lowest form of life this planet has to offer.

and obama just told Canada to go pound sand. The guy hates America. Why else would he do something like that unless it is to just cause more economic prolems for America.

Don't know how many times it's been said: get the bankers, lenders, investors and money changers out of the commodoties market. Limit them and their activity to the money markets where they belong. How about mortgages for hpeful home owners? How about consumer loans? These are things that are needed. But they claim that the potential borrowers cannot pay the debts back. Manipulating commodoties prices to artificially inflated levels doesn't make that task any wasier. It just takes that much money out of the economy. So we have to spend more for less. Sounds like inflation (double digit) staring us in the face. Looks like an over-inflated baloon in desperate search of a pin. Sounds like "LOOK OUT!!!"

Here we go again, I bet that it gets higher than $145 a barrel before the bubble pops. Repeal the Commodities Modernization Act of 2000 and the Financial Modernization Act of 1999.
