Oil price falls as Saudis trump Iran threat

Oil drops below $100 as Saudis say they will offset Iran oil blockade, US Navy warns Iran

NEW YORK (AP) -- Oil prices fell on Wednesday, after Saudi Arabia said it will offset any loss of oil from a threatened Iranian blockade of a crucial tanker route in the Middle East.

The U.S. Navy warned that any disruption of traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz "will not be tolerated."

In New York, benchmark crude fell $1.98, or about 2 percent, to finish at $99.36 a barrel.

Brent crude fell $1.71 to end at $107.56 a barrel in London.

On Tuesday Iran's vice president said that his country was ready to close the Strait of Hormuz — a vital waterway through which a third of the world's tanker traffic flows — if western nations embargo the country's oil because of Iran's ongoing nuclear program. The head of the country's navy added on Wednesday that his fleet can block the strait if need be. His comments came as Iran held a 10-day drill in international waters near the strategic route, which is 21 miles wide at its narrowest point.

A Saudi oil ministry official told The Associated Press that Saudi Arabia and other Gulf producers are ready to provide more oil if Iran tries to block the strait. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue. He didn't specify other routes that could be used to transport oil, although they would likely be longer and more expensive for getting crude to the region's customers.

"Anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations; any disruption will not be tolerated," said Lt. Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, which is responsible for naval operations in the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

Some analysts think the Iranian threats are more rhetoric than reality. "We doubt political posturing will turn into action," energy consultant and trader Stephen Schork said in a report.

"Shutting down the strait ... is the last bullet that Iran has and therefore we have to express some doubt that they would do this and at the same time lose their support from China and Russia," said analyst Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland.

Iran is the fourth largest oil exporter in the world, according to the Energy Department. Most of its crude goes to Asia, with China its biggest customer. Oil provides half of Iran's revenue. Last year that amounted to about $73 billion.

Oil prices were also undercut on Wednesday by persistent worries about Europe and future demand for oil as the region's economy weakens. The European Central Bank said the continent's banks parked a record $590.72 billion overnight with the ECB, reflecting distrust in the European banking system.

In other energy futures trading, heating oil fell 2 cents to finish at $2.89 a gallon, gasoline fell 4 cents to end at $2.65 a gallon and natural gas fell 3 cents to finish the day at $3.08 per 1,000 cubic feet.

heard on radio yesterday that united states biggest export last year was gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel ! we are not using as mush here because of economy. if our supply is so great that we have to sell it to other countries why is our gas prices so #$%$ high?
    • bob 4 months ago
Because of the New York Mercantile.
    • A Yahoo! User 4 months ago
That is actually true. We export a very large amount of refined fuel to many countries. Alot of this fuel is a lower grade than Americans can put into our own gas tanks due to EPA regulations. I watched news journalists talking about the effect of Katrina while giant tankers set out to supply other countries demand for lower grade fuels, right behind the reporter. It's a scam to bilk us out of every dollar we can earn.

California is one of the top producers of oil with several refineries. It regularly has
some of the highest gas prices in the U.S.A. I paid $3.89/gal. yesterday here.

anyone notice the title of this article...Oil prices going down.... and yet the other article on yahoo talks about gas prices rising due to Iran threat???

That is how the Oil companies raise prices, they use fear and scare the market into rasing the price, the media is in on the fix, as well as our so called Leaders, both parties are corrupt and ruining America.

The thing is they have this country divided and are keeping it divided at all costs.

And politician/lobbists quick to find the perfect excuse to raise the price of oil. If it's not a "Oh a perfect storm brewing, Iran threat or someother lame forecast, lets sock it to the American consumers.

HEADLINE:::::LOOSE BOLT AT FIJI REFINERY------SPECULATORS DRIVE UP PRICES 50%!! They're the real rapists of AMERICA!!!!!!!
    • tony 4 months ago
Speculators drive down prices too.I believe that supply and demand usually
makes the market. Those that manipulate it much, get their wallets turned inside
out.Look at what happened to the Hunt Bros.( tried to corner the market in silver).
They drove it way up and then it crashed, leaving them ruined(in the 80's)

There is a reason that the oil corporations have realized the largest profits in world history in the last decade. And what do you suppose they do with these blasphemous profits? Create more drama in the oil fields which drives the speculators into a frenzy. It's a predictable cycle only the stupid can't see.

Capitalism has raised more peoples standard of living in poor countries around the
world more rapidly than any period in history. These people are demanding, with their new-found wealth,to live like we do.This takes oil. There's only so much to go around. I guess that means the price goes up(its more expensive to find and
produce).I don't know what blasphemous profits are,but think my country is living
      through the opposite of them.

The profits are payed out to stock-holders(they own a small portion of the company).A great portion of stock-holders are retirement plans and those saving
for education and their future needs(medical?).

Iran is attempting to destroy their little Navy. Iran has some real idiots running their country.
  • Armed Resistance  •  4 months ago
All of this posturing is funny, because once you realize that Iran's leadership is actually related to the people on capitol hill, the game becomes very transparent. They will bring about WWIII, one way or another. Just like Pearl Harbor was allowed to happen so the U.S. could enter WWII, you are about to see the same thing again. Just like Germany was targeted as the aggressor during WWII, destroyed and handed over to commies, America is about to experience the same thing. History repeats itself. General Patton tried to warn America about these commie rats. Want to know what he said? Read it all at SubvertedNation/net if the website isn't banned in your country.

An Awakened American! Wow, it's so surprising to see someone awake among the slumbering masses.

Read George Washington's Farewell Address, especially the parts concerning foreign policy and our role in the world.

Washington basically says (but please read for yourself):
Our love affair with Israel is an un-American relationship that can only lead to evil.
Washington also states that if we start playing "favorites" with Nations and baby-sit one while hating another, we end up with endless RETALIATION attacks.
Suddenly, Washington is the new Nostradamus. He understood our world better than most people that LIVE in today's world.
(Note how many uneducated people laugh at Ron Paul for saying this very truth. Our un-Constitutional coddling of Israel has led to retaliation attacks. George Washington said it would happen, and the CIA report had the same conclusion)

      Put it this way:
Our military "brass", the pentagon "brass" and our used-to-be-elected "leaders" are all in direct violation of the Constitution and by their actions, are enemies of George Washington and his beliefs. Thankfully, the troops are still We the People, and their over-the-top, monetary support for Ron Paul only highlights this. It's a few "brass" at the top that are operating as enemies of America, and they are teaching as many sheeple as possible the way evil.

Before this story even began, we already know who wins. It's We the People that always win in the end, so if evil wants to try and defeat GOOD one more time, we are more than happy to play that game. Men who lust for power are blinded to the Truth, which is why they think they have defeated the American Spirit. Truth, however, is something on our side, and when they finally do see the Truth, it will be from the inside of a prison cell. Namely - Hell.

The best part about being a Child of God, is that all you have to do is increase the love! Love your neighbors. Love humanity. Love the Earth. Evil is always brought to justice by God, it is not our duty to do God's duty of judgment and sentencing.

Love conquers all. We have to stop soaking up the hatred and fear that our "leaders" are using to tear the world apart. They go against America, God and all that is right with their warmongering, greedy actions. We don't have to do anything but be loving Children of God. I have Faith that God already has the end written, and of course, the enemies of America lose in the end. May God's will be done, and may satan's presence among us be revealed and returned to the pit from where he came.

Actually, Washington was a freemason, and part of the scheme. His words are hollow, because he helped build this masonic trap for the rats that are trying to enslave us.

Furthermore, if we sit idly by and do this lovey dovey bit, we are screwed. They are banking on your inaction. In Russia they SLAUGHTERED 50 million people who didn't do ANYTHING to resist. What would have happened had those 50 million DEAD PEOPLE banded together to solve the problem? OH RIGHT, there wouldn't be a problem anymore. Instead, they went to their deaths because they FAILED TO ACT.

The ONLY reason evil triumphs is because GOOD MEN DO NOTHING to stop it.

I would wager a bet that the US would destroy the entire Iranian naval fleet in about an hour. It would be a mere exercise for our Navy.

Maybe I'm dumb as the proverbial bag of rocks............I don't get it....

Tiny little pizzant countries like Iran, N.Korea or Syria can throw their insignificant temper tantrums, and that becomes a monkey wrench in the operations of the whole globe ???

The spectre of a nuclear-armed Iran, is not really so upsetting, since it is likely to be years before they actually get a viable nuke, unless some other totally idiot country [ N.Korea ]gives them one.

Contrary to a lot of Peanut Gallery sabre rattling, Nuking anyone in the Mid-East, is certainly not the answer, simply due to the guarantee of vengeance-induced escalation into an unimaginable, highly radioactive, uninhabitable............mess.

Yeah.....the United states was the first and only country to employ atomic weapons.....what else short of burning Japan down entirely with the incindiary devices, was going to stop their pipe-dreams of world domination ?
I've always thought a Japanese diplomatic presence at the detonation in Alamogordo, so they could see what they were in line for, would have been adequate to stifle Japans' ambitions............or where would the world be if herr Hitler had developed the bomb first........

Here is a dirty little secret:

Oil is Abiotic, Abiotic oil, also called "inorganic oil," the theory that oil is not from dead dinosaurs but from chemical reactions in the Earth's mantle. Dave McGowan has used the abiotic oil theory to attack the peak oil crowd, suggesting that they're part of a conspiracy to make us think the oil is running out when it's not, perhaps so the oil industry can inflate prices. (Indeed, according to this story, they are inflating prices!)

    # Oil being discovered at 30,000 feet, far below the 18,000 feet where organic matter is no longer found.
    # Wells pumped dry later replenished.
    # Volume of oil pumped thus far not accountable from organic material alone according to present models.

Reported in ScienceDaily, researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm have managed to prove that fossils from animals and plants are not necessary for crude oil and natural gas to be generated. The findings are revolutionary since this means, on the one hand, that it will be much easier to find these sources of energy and, on the other hand, that they can be found all over the globe.

Experiments have shown that under extreme conditions of heat and pressure it is possible to convert iron oxide, calcium carbonate and water into methane, with hydrocarbons containing up to 10 carbon atoms being produced by Russian scientists last century and confirmed in recent US experiments. The absence of large quantities of free gaseous oxygen in the magma prevents the hydrocarbons from burning and therefore forming the lower energy state molecule carbon dioxide. The conditions present in the Earth's mantle would easily be sufficient for these small hydrocarbon chains to polymerise into the longer chain molecules found in crude oil.

Would the biggest customer fund our fleet for this mission?
