Oil prices rise to end near $90 per barrel

Oil prices rose Thursday after the head of the European Central Bank vowed to protect the euro, the currency used by 17 countries in the financially strapped region.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange:

Benchmark crude rose 42 cents to finish at $89.39 per barrel.

Gasoline increased 2.09 cents to end at $2.8138 a gallon.

Heating oil rose 2.45 cents to finish at $2.8685 a gallon.

Natural gas gained 3.5 cents to end at $3.105 per 1,000 cubic feet.

On the ICE Futures exchange in London:

Brent crude gained 88 cents to finish the day at $105.26 per barrel.
