One Confirmed Dead, Dozens Injured in Hoboken Train Crash

A commuter train crashed into the Hoboken, New Jersey, station during Thursday morning's commute, injuring dozens and killing one, according to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

The number of injured is likely to be updated throughout the day.

Multiple transit agencies have arrived or were en route to the site of the accident, the cause of which has not been determined, including the Federal Railroad Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

The train was traveling from Spring Valley to Hoboken when it did not slow down upon arrival to the terminal, crashing into the station and causing a steel beam to fall, while glass from a skylight shattered inside the terminal, reported NBC News.

"[The train] simply did not stop, a radio anchor who had witnessed the crash told CBS. It went right through the barriers and into the reception area.

At least 100 people were being treated for their injuries by New Jersey State EMS, ABC News reported. Multiple ambulances and trauma units from nearby hospitals as well as from other counties were on scene, according to eyewitness reports.

New Jersey Transit trains carry commuters and visitors between New Jersey and New York City every day: Hoboken averaged more than 15,000 passenger boardings on weekdays in 2015, according to the New Jersey Transit authority.

Service in and out of Hoboken, on both NJ Transit and PATH, was suspended in the morning and into the early afternoon. Train service for the PATH was restored at 3 p.m., according to a tweet from the operator.
