Patient Safety Movement Foundation Partners With the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 23, 2014) - The Patient Safety Movement Foundation announced today that it has partnered with the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation (EMPSF) to help achieve zero preventable deaths in hospitals by 2020.

EMPSF is specifically focused on reducing patient safety risks in the practice of emergency medicine. With 130 million visits annually, our nation's emergency departments (EDs) serve as the front door to the hospital and act as the safety net for a large percentage of the population. Typically, these EDs are fast-paced, over-crowded, increasingly complex, high-risk environments with inherent vulnerabilities for error.

EMPSF is developing tools and resources to help mitigate these risks and support providers in their efforts to deliver safe, quality care. Its most recent toolkit, "Safer Sign Out," will soon be included in the list of the Patient Safety Movement's Actionable Patient Safety Solutions to improve the safety and reliability of end-of-shift patient "handoffs" between physicians in the emergency department.

"We are delighted to add EMPSF to the list of our committed partners that have already made significant commitments and progress in improving patient safety and have already saved hundreds of lives," stated Joe Kiani, founder of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation. "By further developing our set of proven Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, and with an all-in approach from a growing list of partners, we look forward to eliminating preventable patient deaths by 2020."

About The Patient Safety Movement Foundation
More than 200,000 people die every year in U.S. hospitals in ways that could have been prevented. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation was established through the support of the Masimo Foundation for Ethics, Innovation, and Competition in Healthcare, to reduce that number of preventable deaths to ZERO by 2020 (0X2020). Improving patient safety will require a collaborative effort from all stakeholders, including patients, healthcare providers, medical technology companies, government, employers, and private payors. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation works with all stakeholders to address the problems and solutions of patient safety. The Foundation also convenes Patient Safety, Science and Technology summits, the next being held January 23-24, 2015, which bring together some of our nation's best minds for thought-provoking discussions and new ideas to challenge the status quo. By presenting specific, high-impact recipes to meet patient safety challenges, encouraging medical technology companies to share the data for which their products are purchased, and asking hospitals to make commitments to implement Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, the Foundation is working toward zero preventable deaths by 2020.
