Proposals sought to lease RI land for farming
RI environmental dept. seeking proposals to raise, harvest crops on parcels of state land
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island environmental officials are accepting proposals from those wishing to lease state land for farming.
The Department of Environmental Management is seeking requests for proposals to raise and harvest agricultural products on several parcels. Land is available in the Eight Rod Farm Management Area in Tiverton; the Wright Farm in the Carolina Management Area in Richmond; the South Shore Management Area in South Kingstown; and the Arcadia Management Area in Exeter and Hopkinton.
The parcels were acquired to preserve open space, support public recreation and protect wildlife.
Successful bidders will sign a five-year lease with the state and pay a per-acre fee to plant and harvest row crops between March 1 and Oct. 1. The parcels revert back to DEM after Oct. 1 of each year.
