Quick Ways to Reduce Your Expenses

It may be time to go into emergency mode. If you just lost your job, received a giant medical bill, or otherwise experienced a huge financial setback and have an urgent need to cut your expenses, the following tips can help.

These suggestions can also be helpful if you just want to find some extra money to save or invest, but they might be more of a sacrifice than you are willing to make. If you are facing a financial emergency, these tips could be just what you need to stop the rapid depletion of your savings. You can make these changes quickly to help get a handle on your finances before things become desperate.

Cancel or downgrade your cable subscription. Doing this won't make you rich, but canceling your monthly cable bill will give you more money to spend on necessary expenses such as food. If you have any other recurring monthly expenses for entertainment, such as Netflix, you should cut those, too. If you have home Internet, consider cutting it down to the cheapest plan as well.

Cancel your fitness center membership. If you are not on a long-term contract, you should cancel your membership to your local gym or fitness center. You can still work out at home or go for a run in your neighborhood. If you weren't going to the gym on a regular basis, this wasn't a smart expense anyway.

Cancel your home phone. If you have a cell phone contract with a reasonable number of minutes, you should cut your landline. There is no need to pay for two phones. If your cell phone isn't under contract, you should consider cutting the cell phone instead of the landline. Do whichever makes the most sense for you. Also, check to see if there is a cheaper plan that would work for you.

Increase your insurance deductibles. All you need to do is call your insurance agent and you can reduce your insurance bills considerably. If you have paid your insurance for the next six months or year, they may even send you a rebate check for the difference. As soon as your financial emergency is over, start saving money in your emergency fund to cover the increased deductible.

Sell a car. If you are a two-car family, sell one of your cars if it is possible for you to get by with just one car. Not only will you get some cash, you will save money on gas, insurance, and registration fees. Being a one-car family can save you some serious cash.

If you were able to make all these changes in a month, you would see a rapid reduction in your monthly expenses. Taking these steps could help you make it through your financial emergency.

I see. Cancel you home phone and cable but not your internet because then you couldn't read articles about saving money. And if you do reduce your internet to the cheapest option it is dial up and you need a phone line for that. I have a prepaid Tracfone and since I am a stay at home mom it is cheapest for me to use the home phone but I need a cell phone in case of emergency. I am not going to sit on the side of the road hoping someone will stop and help me when I have two kids with me. The key to saving money is to stop buying things you don't need. You don't need new clothes every season and you can rent movies instead of buying every new one when it comes out. You don't need a new car every few years either. Learn to make due with what you have.

Wake up Daisy..The article is about EMERGENCYS, not long term ways to cut expenses. The article should have mentioned having at least 3 months of your monthly expenses put away in your savings..a just in case account.

I agree with the above to cut expenses except the cell phone and cable. I have a land line, $19 a month. Never had a cell phone. Cable saves me money. Cheap entertainment compared to going to football games, movie theaters, plus business channels like CNBC, for example, have helped me make money in the stock market.

I actually live on an Hawaiian Island in a town where not much is happening, not the one next to my name. I totally agree,I wouldnt know what to do without my cable plus I am always asking them for deals, and you know what? They actually give it to me,all the time. I cant see myself spending $9.00 to see a movie or a show.
This writer just want you to stare at the four walls to save money. Then tells you to sell your couch you can sit on the floor.

I don't understand why anyone would pay for TV if you can't get it for free just watch it on the computer I've never had cable/dish I've only had this computer a couple of months half the time I'm on it is to watch shows I missed or CBS cuz ever since the whole digital conversion joke [my TV still gets NBC ABC FOX ION CW on analog] my CBS is gone

The Internet is available for free at your local library if you have Wifi. Google wifi hotspots. if you have a laptop, as it will at least save you the time you'd otherwise spend waiting in line for a computer. My opinion is that job seekers should have cell phones because its my belief that employers won't even take the time to leave a message on your landline--they'll just call up the next person who in all probability has a cell phone and CAN be reached right away. I'm sorry but I think the job market's too tight for anybody to stand out in such a way that an employer will opt to leave a message on your answering machine, put aside the rest of the resumes and wait for your call. So I think its best to be on an even footing with applicants who could be reached right away.

This article make sense. After all, who wants all those things you can have for free. Like the wifi connection. I didn't know that my android phone is capable of doing such. It vastly reduced my monthly bills. Plus, I cut down on my telephone bill. I do have long term mobile contract with sprint which I pay for 89.99 a month. And I don't watch TV anymore. I encourage authors such as the one above to keep on posting this kind of materials, not topics such as how to become rich. If you are unemployed, for instance, how can u be any richer?

      I c ouldn't justify spending $90 a month and you say that's cutting down
