Radius (RDUS) Reports Positive Data on Osteoporosis Drug
Radius Health, Inc. RDUS presented positive top-line data from the phase III ACTIVE (Abaloparatide Comparator Trial In Vertebral Endpoints) study on its lead candidate abaloparatide - subcutaneous (SC).
Radius Health is developing the daily self-administered injection, abaloparatide-SC, for the treatment of patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis, who are at an increased risk of a fracture.
In the phase III ACTIVE study, it was found that women with postmenopausal osteoporosis who received 18 months of daily abaloparatide-SC injection experienced a 70% reduction in the incidence of major osteoporotic fractures when compared to placebo. Responder analysis showed higher increases in bone mineral density at three combined anatomical sites (total hip, femoral neck and lumbar spine) in the abaloparatide-SC arm as compared to placebo or Eli Lilly and Company’s LLY Forteo (teriparatide) at 6, 12 and 18 months. The company plans to submit regulatory application in the U.S. and EU for the candidate by the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Radius Health is developing the abaloparatide transdermal patch for potential use as a short wear-time transdermal patch designed to administer abaloparatide without the need of a subcutaneous injection.
As per company sources, more than 200 million people suffer from osteoporosis globally and 2 million osteoporosis related fractures occur annually in the U.S. However, the majority of osteoporosis patients remain undiagnosed and undertreated, thus representing an unmet market need.
