Rate increases for Washington natural gas users

Regulator OKs rate increases on 1.2 million natural gas customers of 4 utilities in Washington

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- The cost of natural gas is going up for 1.2 million customers of four utilities in Washington.

The state Utilities and Transportation Commission says it approved the rate adjustments because of rising wholesale prices.

The increases take effect Friday for customers of Puget Sound Energy, Avista in Eastern Washington, Kennewick-based Cascade Natural Gas, and customers in southwest Washington of Portland based Northwest Natural Gas.

About half of Washington's natural gas comes from Alberta and British Columbia and the rest from Rocky Mountain states.
