Retail, consumer confidence on tap


Today's economic calendar includes some key data involving the consumer, as well as important earnings reports.

Retail sales for September, delayed by the federal government shutdown, will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET. Producer prices will come out at the same time.

The Case-Shiller index of home prices will follow at 9 a.m. ET. Consumer confidence and business inventories will come out at 10 a.m. ET.

Today also marks the beginning of the Federal Reserve's two-day monthly meeting. The central bank will announce its decision on interest rates and monetary policy tomorrow.

Notable companies reporting quarterly results today include Archer Daniels Midland, Aetna, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Pfizer, Valero Energy, and U.S. Steel. Gilead Sciences, Baidu, LinkedIn, Leap Wireless, Western Union and Take-Two Interactive will follow after the closing bell.
