Your Ride: All-American 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

Boldride

This isn’t the first time we’ve featured a classic Bel Air. One of the most popular collectors cars around, the iconic body style and recognizable nameplate make this Chevy one to be remembered. One of our readers, Dave, showed us his all-American ’57 and took us through the build of his very own bold ride.

How did you acquire your ride?

I have always loved the ’57 Chevy.  I still have all the car books from when I was in High school that my friends put comments in about my dream car — ’57 Chevy’s featured in the books.  My friend gave me this car in November 1980 when I was 16 and I still have the car.

He took the front end, 283 tri-power motor and rock crusher transmission out of the car and gave me the body/frame. Yes gave it to me. We pushed it from his house to my mother’s house about half a mile away.  I had no mechanical skills at that time so I tried to do what I could.  Needless to say I never drove the car until 2001.

What have you done to make it a bolder ride?

I drove an ’83 Chevy pick-up truck to my house and pulled the motor and transmission. It was about 4 weeks until the Woodward Dream Cruise which I had attended since 1998.  The body was off the frame and stripped to just the body.  No glass, interior, dash it was stripped.

I came home from work every day and stayed out in the garage until 11 every night, and drove it to Woodward  August of 2001.  Then 9/11 happened and I had the idea for the patriotic paint job. So I painted it like that as my tribute to all the innocent people who died that day.

I still cruise it all summer and love to see the smiles and thumbs ups from people.

What would you change about your car, if anything?

Currently I have factory dual quads and a 700r4 transmission.  Hopefully someday I can get a nice posi rear end underneath it. That’s about all I would change on the car.

I currently have a few other 57 Chevys. They have been a part of my life for 33 years and hopefully I can pass one down to each of my kids when they get older.
