Rise in Fixed Penalty Notices

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire -02/14/12)- Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of car insurance is warning motorists that they could be hit with an increase in fixed penalty fines.

In proposals put forward by Justice Secretary, Kenneth Clarke, the fixed penalty notice for speeding tickets, not wearing a seatbelt, or failing to stop at a zebra crossing could increase to GBP 80 or GBP 100 in a bid to raise more money for support services for victims of crime.

Proceeds from the fines would also go towards improving road safety schemes. The Government hopes to raise an additional GBP 30 million from the increase.

Some motoring organisations have hit out at the proposals, claiming that increase was just another way for the Government to 'tax' drivers.

Steve Chelton, Claims Manager for Swinton said, "Speeding is against the law and endangers the lives of drivers, passengers, other road users and pedestrians. However, motorists need to be aware that if they are convicted of a motoring offence then there may be an increase in their motor insurance premium."
