Salary Cap moves that could be made by the Buffalo Bills

With free agency right around the corner for the NFL and it’s teams, it is that time of year when players begin to get nervous. Potentially having signed some big contracts in the past, front office personnel look for players that either underperformed or carry too much salary to keep going forward. In the case of the Buffalo Bills, that means certain roster turnover thanks to the arrival of a new head coach.

Using a neat little tool from spotrac.com, fans across the league finally have a chance to make their own roster choices. While the tool is only used for salary cap purposes, it does give us some insight into what the front office of our favorite teams goes through. Taking advantage of this tool, I thought it would be fun to show off some of my own roster cuts and re-negotiations that I feel the Bills could perform this offseason.

For the purpose of this article, we will go along with spotrac’s system of choice when it comes to restructuring deals. When selected, the base salary of the player is converted down to a minimum given their current deal. While there is some wiggle room in the middle, it does show what could happen when certain deals are re-negotiated this offseason.

Starting off with regular old roster cuts, Tyrod Taylor is the biggest name to make this list. With his option not being picked up, some major cash will be saved by the Buffalo Bills. Though there is a shot that he could return to the team on a much more team friendly deal, for this exercise we will not yet speculate on that occurrence.

Joining him in the unemployment line are Dan Carpenter, Marcus Easley, and IK Enemkpali. Of the three, Carpenter was the only one that had a major effect on this team. However, it was not the effect anyone in the team or fan base would have wanted. As for Easley and Enemkpali, both players have deals in the millions, cutting them would save the team quite a bit.

On the restructuring side of things, I was forced to get a little creative. Considering that these players may take cheaper contracts to help the Buffalo Bills improve next season, we have listed Jerry Hughes, Charles Clay, and Richie Incognito. While all three have good size contracts, they could be convinced to take a smaller salary in order to help the team.

These combined moves would save the team almost $24 million this offseason. With some bigger name players needing new contracts and free agency right around the corner, the Buffalo Bills could have some money to spend this offseason.
