Sam Mustafa: Charleston Welcomes The Wreckfish

The Wreckfish is named after an interesting species of fish that lives off the coast of South Carolina. This fish congregates around shipwrecks at the bottom of the ocean. The fish's flavor is reminiscent of that of grouper, but its texture is more akin to that of swordfish. With firm, white meat and a large natural flake, the wreckfish has become a low country favorite.

When designing his new restaurant, Sam Mustafa, Charleston Hospitality Group founder, wanted to recreate the feeling of a shipwreck to highlight the unique personality of the menu's featured item. "We have turned the location into, basically, a shipwreck," Mustafa explains. "We have sanded the floors and made the interior look weathered, as if it had been through a major storm, while maintaining the comfort that the restaurant's patrons expect. We have also added salt water fish tanks and have gorgeous fish swimming within them, allowing diners to feel as if they are looking out from within a wrecked ship. We have also taken cues from the theme in our efforts to decorate the space. Our interior designers have pulled together lanterns for the tables, fish nets, and crab traps."

In addition to the ambiance created inside the restaurant, The Wreckfish features a half of a ship atop the building, which has been placed in a way that makes it look as if it has run into the roof of the structure, pending approval from the City. A family-oriented restaurant, Mustafa is pleased with the atmosphere that the design team has created. He believes it fits the theme, the menu, and the experience of eating at The Wreckfish perfectly.

The Wreckfish is located at 7690 Northwoods Boulevard in North Charleston, South Carolina, where the Market Street Saloon was once located. Mustafa and the restaurant's staff invite area residents and visitors to enjoy the offerings of this fun new destination.
