NEW YORK (AP) -- Sears Holdings Corp. plans to close between 100 and 120 Sears and Kmart stores after poor sales during the holidays, the most crucial time of year for retailers.

The closings are the latest and most visible in a long series of moves to try to fix a retailer that has struggled with falling sales and shabby stores.

In an internal memo Tuesday to employees, CEO and President Lou D'Ambrosio said that the retailer had not "generated the results we were seeking during the holiday."

Sears Holdings Corp. said it has yet to determine which stores will close but said it will post on http://www.searsmedia.com when a final list is compiled. Sears would not discuss how many, if any, jobs would be cut.

The company has more than 4,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada. Its stock dropped $8.67, or 18.9 percent, to $37.18 in morning trading. The shares dipped to their lowest point in more than three years at $36.51 during the first few minutes of trading.

The company's revenue at stores open at least a year fell 5.2 percent to date for the quarter at both Sears and Kmart, the company said Tuesday. That includes the critical holiday shopping period.

Sears Holdings said the declining sales, ongoing pressure on profit margins and rising expenses pulled its adjusted earnings lower. The company predicts fourth-quarter adjusted earnings will be less than half the $933 million it reporter for the same quarter last year.

Sears Holdings also anticipates a non-cash charge of $1.6 billion to $1.8 billion in the quarter to write off the value of carried-over tax deductions it now doesn't expect to be profitable enough to use.

Sears said it will no longer prop up "marginally performing" stores in hopes of improving their performance and will now concentrate on cash-generating stores.

"These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers," D'Ambrosio said.

The weaker-than-expected performance reflects what analysts say is a deteriorating outlook for the retailer.

The results point to "deepening problems at this struggling chain and renewed worries about Sears survivability," said Gary Balter, an analyst at Credit Suisse. "The extent of the weakness may be larger than expected but the reasons behind it are not. It begins and some would argue ends with Sears' reluctance to invest in stores and service."

Balter also said Sears' weakening performance may lead its vendors to start to worry about their exposure.

The company has seen rival department stores like Macy's Inc. and discounters like Target Corp. continue to steal customers. It's also contending with a stronger Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, which has hammered hard its low-price message and brought back services like layaway, which allows financially stressed shoppers to finance their holiday purchases by paying a little at a time.

The tough economy hasn't helped, either. Middle-income shoppers, the company's core customers, have seen their wages fail to keep up with higher costs for household basics like food.

But the big problem, analysts say, is Sears hasn't invested in remodeling, leaving its stores uninviting.

"There's no reason to go to Sears," said New York-based independent retail analyst Brian Sozzi, "It offers a depressing shopping experience and uncompetitive prices."

Sears Holdings Corp., based in Hoffman Estates, Ill., said that the store closings will generate $140 to $170 million in cash from inventory sales. The retailer expects the sale or sublease of real estate holdings to add more cash.

Sears Holdings appeared to stumble early in the holiday season, as it opened its Sears, Roebuck and Co. stores at 4 a.m. on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Rivals including Best Buy Co., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Toys R Us opened as early as Thanksgiving night. Sears stores had opened on Thanksgiving Day in 2010. Kmart has been opening on Thanksgiving for years.

A hint that trouble might be brewing came in mid-December when Sears Holdings unexpectedly announced that 260 of its Sears, Roebuck and Co. locations would stay open until midnight through Dec. 23.

Kmart's 4.4 percent decline in revenue at stores open at least a year was blamed on diminished layaways and a drop in clothing and consumer electronics sales. Part of Kmart's layaway softness likely stemmed from competitive pressure. Wal-Mart had said that its holiday layaway business had been popular. Toys R Us expanded its layaway services to include more items. Kmart's grocery sales climbed during the period.

Sears cited lackluster consumer electronics and home appliance sales for its 6 percent dropoff. Sears' clothing sales were flat. Sales of Lands' End products at Sears stores rose in the mid-single digits.

Sears Holdings said it also plans to lower its fixed costs by $100 million to $200 million and trim its 2012 peak domestic inventory by $300 million from 2011's $10.2 billion at the third quarter's end.

D'Ambrosio acknowledged in his internal memo that criticism over Sears Holdings' performance was likely to come, but that the company was prepared for the days ahead.

"We will bounce back and become stronger than ever," he said.

"That will make Barack Hussein happy!!.."

Yup, more votes for their Savior BO. He will just print more $100 bills and give them to all who needs them. After all, the only job he has ever had was spending taxpayer's money.

Obama is making vets pay more for Tri-Care, has overseen the disposal of service member's body parts in the dump, has kept Guantanamo open, kept the Patriot Act, and kept us in Iraq another 3 years...and he keeps handing money to big banks and overseas banks rather than fixing our own economy. He is even worse than Bush! Bush was an idiot...Obama is WORSE than an idiot!

Sears should be concentrating on its top-line products such as Craftsman tools, Homart remodeling fixtures, its home appliance lines, etc. Sears used to be known for quality, and could still capture the higher-end consumer who is not swayed by inferior products offered by WalMart and Target.

Sears stores are always nasty inside. Old looking, tired, racks and racks of overpriced clothing and appliance stores in dingy window-less basements. JUST where I want to go shopping.

Sears tried to be a Best Buy or a Walmart and just flat out lost. 15 years ago, they ran a pretty good commission based operation, avoiding a circuit city type repuation for being a step over used car salesmen. Sears used to be a hometown kinda place. Now its a cheap Best Buy. Change back Sears!

Kmart thinks they only need one cashier, even with a hundred customers.....geez....I've left more merchandise at the front of kmart then I've bought in the last few years.

To be honest, it's no wonder Kmart is closing because their customer service is horrible. I have alot of patience with people but they try mine.
  • seethepositive  •  5 months ago
by the list most of those stores already closed. if they are failing it is because of management, and not ordering goods for the area they are located. most of customer service is hiring know nothing youth and no training in being polite to customers. right or wrong, if pricers are comparable, customer service can make a difference.

I do like Sears for work shoes. At least I can buy a decent leather work boot there and have more than one style to choose from. Walmart work boots are terrible. Plus I, like most guys, love the Sears tool dept. Hopefully they can get their act together cause I hate target and walmart

I remember when I was a kid it was a big treat to go to Sears. Four floors of tools, clothes, toys, car service, even puppies and kittens. Now it's a place to go if you have no choice. Nasty stores, nasty employees, just a nasty shopping experience.
It just goes to show you how badly management can ruin a once great company. They once built the Sears tower and now they're related to Kmart and probably will go bankrupt in the next few years.

Years back (maybe 9 or 10), a Kmart closed in Auburn NY. It was a messy store, old, outdated, poor lighting, grimy tiled floors, horrible, unkempt restrooms. Hardly any people shopped there, that’s one reason why! A year or so later, a Super Wal-Mart opened less than 2 miles away, and there’s ALWAYS cars parked. Kmarts are getting better, but they still need to wake up! The Kmart ads are better now, thank God, just look at each store individually, and HONESTLY evaluate.
    Check out Walmart!

I almost bought monopoly from Kamrt this year. Ordered online and after many hours I was told to go home and wait for a call. They had 5 boxes on a shelf. What a joke. I said thank you no I'll go to target next to my house. I also said that will never shot at Kmart. Did I cause them to go out of business?

Sears spends more money on security and making us shoppers feel like we're criminals when we shop there than what they should be spending it on...good customer service and a fresh coat of paint...I haven't shopped there for years and I only return my broken tools there for replacement...even that is a bad experience, they throw them in a lock box and then tell you they no longer produce your tool after it's too late. I lost a $150 PIPE CUTTER THAT WAY, THEY TRIED TO REPLACE IT WITH A CHEAP ROUND GARBAGE PIPE CUTTER! The one they threw in the box was a quick release ratchet 3" pipe cutter! Oh, and they don't make the large screwdrivers anymore as well as the small ones! Sears lost their edge years ago!!!! I'm not surprised by this...

If they drop the price of men's boxers and other products, they might have had a chance. I looked at their prices and for 3 pairs of boxers, the price was $18. So what did I do, Walmart, $8.97 Hanes, 5-pack so whoever the genius was at KMart to increase prices for products most used, well, check his or her pockets, that's where the profits are, CEO's while the minimum wage worker's suffer and have to hit the unemployments lines. Great going KSmart!

I do not or never have worked for Sears/Kmart, so I have no personal axe to grind but this is no secret, Eddie Lambert is a tyrant to work for. He is a hedge fund guru and he knows only one way to manage, by being a bully. He seen an opportunity to capture profitable Kmart store leases and turn around and make money on them by closing stores. He then saw a larger opportunity to do the same with extremely positive and profitable leases with the Sears stores. So Eddie decided to buy Sears. Eddie Lambert does not care about the company other than to rape the good leases for the Sears and Kmart stores. He will make a huge profit on the subleases and the selling of the leases. He is about profits and money in his pocket; he is not worried about shopping tradition for their customers, he does not know or care to know the retail business, he does not care about his employees or his customers. Their stores are filthy (The Sears stores never were dirty before Eddie bought Sears, restrooms are dirty, floors look dirty with a horrible shine compared to other stores), they are out of stock, the merchandise is looks uninviting, you cannot find a person in the store that will help you, there prices are higher for the same quality merchandise than other stores, etc. It is and always will be about Eddie Lambert and how he can rape a company to turn a profit for himself. He did it to Kmart and now he has done it to Sears.

Thank you for the background information. I knew it had to be a senior executive problem. Sears is and has been an American icon of mercantilism and to watch it be run into the ground is really tragic. Eddie Lambert...now we have a face to this misery.
