SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Today, more than 200 volunteers from Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) and the Borough of Seaside Heights community joined together with organizers from KaBOOM! to roll up their sleeves and build a brand new playground in the Hurricane Sandy-damaged oceanfront community. The project marks the celebration of DPS’s goal to build or improve 2,000 playgrounds by the end of 2013 through its Let’s Play initiative in partnership with KaBOOM!
“We are so proud to have this new playground in our community,” said Seaside Heights City Councilmember Anthony Vaz. “We have been through a lot in the past year, but ensuring the children of Seaside Heights have a safe and fun place to play is an important step in our recovery. We are extremely grateful to Dr Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM! for making this project a reality.”
Seaside Heights sustained extensive damage from Hurricane Sandy last October, and with its rebuilding underway, suffered a second tragedy in September when fire damaged large parts of its iconic boardwalk.
“Through our Let’s Play initiative, we’re proud to be a part of the effort to provide kids the opportunity to play. It’s what they deserve and what this community has rallied to provide them,” said Vicki Draughn, vice president of corporate affairs at DPS. “It is fitting that we celebrate building or improving 2,000 playgrounds in a community that continues to show amazing spirit and resilience.”
Prior to building the playground, the children met with KaBOOM! and DPS representatives on August 15 to sketch out images of their dream playgrounds during a Design Day. Their ideas were brought to life today through the hard work of the volunteers who assembled the pieces in less than five hours.
Let’s Play is a community partnership led by Dr Pepper Snapple Group to get kids and families active nationwide. The first Let’s Play initiative is a $15 million, three-year commitment to KaBOOM!, the national nonprofit that’s saving play by ensuring there is a great place to play within walking distance of every child. DPS’s efforts with KaBOOM! will benefit an estimated five million children across the country.

KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most. Children today spend less time playing outdoors than any previous generation, a fact that is having disastrous consequences on their health, achievement levels, and overall well-being. Social entrepreneur Darell Hammond founded non-profit KaBOOM! in 1996 in Washington, D.C. with a vision of creating a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America because children need to play actively every day at home, in school and in their communities. Since then, KaBOOM! has mapped over 90,000 places to play, built more than 2,300 playgrounds, and successfully advocated for play policies in hundreds of cities across the country. KaBOOM! also provides communities with online tools to self-organize and take action to support play on both a local and national level. Hammond chronicles the founding of the organization and the importance of the cause of play in his The New York Times Best Seller KaBOOM!: A Movement to Save Play, now out in paperback. The book details how businesses and communities can work together to save play for children across the country. All author proceeds support KaBOOM!. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., KaBOOM! also has an office in San Mateo, Calif. For more information, visit www.kaboom.org.
