The most popular downloaded free app from the App Store at Apple Inc. (AAPL) in September was YouTube from Google Inc. (GOOG). The ever-popular Candy Crush Saga from Ltd. ranked second, and a new title, Deer Hunter 2014 from Glu Mobile Inc. (GLUU) is the third-most downloaded game from the App Store.

At Google Play, the most popular free app comes from Facebook Inc. (FB), followed by WhatsApp Messenger from WhatsApp Inc., and Candy Crush Saga. The LINE: Free Calls & Messages app is fourth and Skype, now owned by Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is fifth.

At the Inc. (AMZN) Appstore, the top free app is Despicable Me: Minion Rush. The top paid app at Amazon’s Appstore is Minecraft, bu the fourth-most downloaded paid app is the Kindle edition of Wreck-it Ralph from The Walt Disney Co. (DIS).

The data comes from research firm Distimo.

There are iOS and Android versions of the two movie-related apps, Despicable Me: Minion Rush and Wreck-it Ralph, and there are far more iOS and Android devices than there are Kindles out there in the world. So why are the downloads for Kindle so much more attractive?

One reason certainly is the much more limited selection of Kindle apps - fewer than 100,000 compared with around a million for iOS and Android. But it could also be that the Kindle is more attractive as a device for for cost reasons.

The latest Kindle Fire HDX will sell for $229 when it becomes available on Friday. The iPad mini is at least $100 more. The Nexus 7 from Google sells for the same price as the new Kindle model, but the screen is smaller. If a tablet is destined to be passed around among family members, maybe a less expensive device fills the bill.

Whatever the reason, the fact that the movie tie-in apps are among the most popular on the Kindle is an interesting development.
