SHSU Earns Top Recognition in Online Education

HUNTSVILLE, TX--(Marketwire -01/12/12)- Sam Houston State University's online education has been recognized as a "Top Online Education Program" by the U.S. News and World Report in three categories and has received an "Honor Roll" designation, the magazine announced Tuesday.

SHSU's College of Education, which paved the way for the university's online education when it introduced the first web-based degree 12 years ago, has one of only 14 graduate education programs in the country, and only two in Texas, to be given the "Honor Roll" designation, which highlights "programs that consistently rank in the top third among their peers at the bachelor's and master's levels."

"This outstanding honor is truly a tribute to our innovative and student-centered faculty and staff," said education Dean Genevieve Brown. "More than a decade ago, our college leadership and faculty members had the vision and commitment to initiate a delivery system that would be reflective of the emerging needs of working professionals in schools and agencies."

Honor roll designations are based on rankings in four areas in master's degree-level programs, as well as in online bachelor's degree programs.

SHSU's online service and technology, one of U.S. News's four indicator categories, was listed in the top 10 percent in three different fields: ranking No. 2 nationally for online bachelor's degree programs, No. 4 for online graduate education programs, and No. 14 for online business programs.

The university's support services include the DELTA (Distance Education and Learning Technologies for Academics) Center, which opened in 2009 and both provides and supports many of the digital tools and programs utilized across campus; the Newton Gresham Library, which offers livestreams of video collections, chats, and other digital content; and Blackboard and classroom livestreaming.

SHSU's College of Education also ranked within the top 50 for faculty credentials and training (No. 21) and student engagement and accreditation (No. 46).

In addition, the entire online bachelor's degree program also earned the No. 5 national ranking for faculty credentials and training and No. 66 for student engagement and assessment. The College of Business Administration's graduate online program also ranked No. 53 for student engagement and accreditation.
