BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire -07/10/12)- Digital Lumens today announced that Silver Beauty, a Chicago-area company that builds and leases warehouses, has upgraded a 177,413-square foot facility to the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System and is saving 90% on its annual lighting energy costs. The system features wirelessly networked intelligent LED fixtures and LightRules lighting management software designed to maximize energy efficiency.
Since installation, the new LED-based industrial lighting system has reduced the facility's $78,335 annual lighting costs by 90%, to just under $4,078 or 3.9ȼ per square foot, while delivering brighter, higher quality light for its tenant's 24x7 warehousing operations. Previously, the facility used 1,000-Watt high-intensity discharge lamps, which were replaced with the Digital Lumens 18,000-lumen intelligent fixtures, all with integrated occupancy and daylight harvesting sensors. The project rebate was provided by ComEd under its Smart Ideas program.
"Our goal was to find a lighting solution that consumed a lot less energy, performed well with little or no maintenance, performed in unheated warehouses in cold climates, took advantage of natural light coming from our extensive skylight system and could be easily dimmed or turned off to further increase the savings," said Gary Raymond, Managing Partner for Silver Beauty. "With Digital Lumens, we found that solution in a smart lighting system that can be easily tailored to meet the specific needs of our tenants. Unquestionably, this level of control and efficiency gives us a competitive edge in the very crowded marketplace for leased warehouse space in Chicago."
To aid in the design, evaluation and lighting selection process, the Silver Beauty management team turned to Green Light of Chicago, IL, an energy-efficiency consulting team. According to Michael McAlinden, President of Green Light National, "We recommended the Digital Lumens system for its unsurpassed energy efficiency, superior operation in all temperature environments, as well as for the level of control it provides over facility lighting. The results from the Silver Beauty installation are remarkable, and reflect what is possible with intelligent LEDs."
In the Silver Beauty facility, the Digital Lumens system automatically provides the target illumination required when the space is occupied, then dims to 40% in well-traveled aisles, and 10% elsewhere for security purposes, when a space is unoccupied. Lighting instantaneously turns back on when personnel, such as a rapidly moving forklift operator, trigger an occupancy sensor. Because the Digital Lumen fixtures have integrated daylight sensors, they assess available ambient light and dim or turn off when enough natural light is present. On sunny days, skylights provide up to 40% of the lighting needed to illuminate the warehouse.
"From high energy and maintenance costs to poor performance and light output, facilities are wrestling with a whole host of lighting-related issues that are eminently solvable with today's generation of intelligent LEDs," said Michael Feinstein, Digital Lumens Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "Nothing pleases us more than working with market-leading organizations like Silver Beauty and Green Light to solve persistent lighting challenges in a way that vastly improves both operational and energy efficiency."
