SMBTA Highlights an American Small Business Success Story

Mobility Technology Helps Disabled Veterans and Civilians

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- SMBTA is identifying small business successes using innovative technology and improving our communities. One standout find is Flexiciser.

Tens of thousands of seriously wounded troops survived combat in Iraq and Afghanistan because of dramatically improved field medical services. Experts agree that many would not have survived facing the same conditions during the Viet Nam War.

Now back home, a major percentage of those disabled veterans suffer from mobility challenges due to their loss of limbs or related injuries. In addition to paraplegia and quadriplegia, hundreds of thousands of civilians face similar challenges due to multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, stroke, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease, severe arthritis or brain injury.

Thanks to Physical Movement Therapy Device (PMTD) by Flexiciser, a California small business, a wheelchair bound patient can now benefit from self-operated therapy increasing range of motion and muscle mass while reducing spasticity.

At the Rhode Island Veterans Hospital in Providence, patients are not only able to experience repetitive whole body movement but are finding some relief from the stress and depression linked to their injuries.

“We have used this equipment with hundreds of individuals with disabilities ranging from moderate to severe with very positive reactions,” said Dr. Sam Britton, former Director of California State University’s Center of Achievement for the Physically Disabled.

“We hear a lot about all of the games and social inter-action coming from modern technology in our computer age. We don’t hear enough about how much healthcare is improving through technology in the hands of dedicated caregivers. Those of us who have had family experiences with such disabilities are dedicated to expanding the use of products like PMTD particularly for those who have been in harm’s way and returned so challenged,” said Arthur Kassel, CEO and founder of Flexiciser.
