Southern Co. elects David Grain to its board

ATLANTA (AP) -- Southern Co. said Monday that it elected David Grain to its board.

Grain is founder and managing partner of Grain Management LLC, a Sarasota, Fla.-based private equity firm that specializes in investments in wireless communications infrastructure. He also serves as CEO of Grain Communications Group Inc., the Atlanta-based utility said.

Before forming the Grain companies, Grain was president of Global Signal Inc., where he led Pinnacle Holdings Inc. from bankruptcy protection through its turnaround. Pinnacle was renamed Global Signal Inc. in 2004 and acquired by Crown Castle International Corp. in 2007.

Grain also served as a senior vice president with AT&T Broadband from 2000 until 2003. He was a principal with Morgan Stanley from 1992 until 2000.

Southern Co. shares fell 6 cents to $43.67 in morning trading.
