DALLAS (AP) -- Southwest Airlines Co. said Thursday it is taking applications from hospitals and medical-transportation charities to provide travel for families dealing with serious illness.

Southwest said it donates airline tickets to nonprofit hospitals and medical organizations, which distribute them to patients who must travel for treatment.

The airline said applications are available on its website through Sept. 30.
