Spirit names Frontier exec to chief operating job

Spirit Airlines names Frontier Airlines executive as its chief operating officer

MIRAMAR, Fla. (AP) -- Spirit Airlines Inc. said Wednesday that it has hired former Frontier Airlines executive John Bendoraitis as its new chief operating officer.

Starting in mid-October, he will be responsible for flight operations, maintenance and other duties at the Miramar, Fla., low-cost carrier. He replaces Tony Lefebvre, who left in July for another job.

Bendoraitis, 50, has been chief operating officer at Frontier since March 2012. From 2008 to 2012, he was president of Comair Airlines, which operated Delta Connection flights for Delta Air Lines Inc., and where he led the revamp of the airline's cost structure. Bendoraitis also has held senior executive jobs at Compass Airlines and Northwest Airlines.

Spirit shares rose 5 cents to close at $34.23.
