The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose a point at 1,564. The Nasdaq composite was up a point at 3,224.
Alcoa, traditionally the first company in the Dow to report results, edged down 5 cents to $8.34 after reporting earnings late Monday.
J.C. Penney plunged 11 percent to $14.20 a day after the company fired its CEO and brought back his predecessor to lead the troubled department store chain. Mike Ullman was CEO for seven years until November 2011.
