Stocks edge lower, government reports shows consumer spending slowed

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks are edging lower at midday, pulling back from close to record levels.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 55 points, to 13,963. The Standard & Poor's 500 dropped 4 points to 1,519 and the Nasdaq composite rose 4 points to 3,190.

The Dow was pulled lower by McDonald's falling $1.40 to $93.70 and Caterpillar declining 87 cents to $96.37. Eighteen stocks in the 30-member index declined.

A government report also shows that spending by Americans barely budged higher last month.
